What we say

Discovering there’s far more to Goa than just beach. Often, these days on walks through inland Goa, one witnesses where the wealthy, wanting to live the Goan dream, buy plots replete with indigenous delicacies that once grew plentifully – pineapples, cashews, coconuts, jackfruit, mangoes, pepper vines – and raze it all to build modern monstrosities.

I was delighted therefore to come across Dudhsagar Plantation, where the Alvares family have transformed 50 acres of barren, deforested land into a thriving organic spice plantation exactly as it should be. This isn’t manicured resort landscaping, in fact a resort wasn’t initially planned – it’s authentic Goan agricultural heritage restored through traditional methods where cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, cashews and vanilla grow as they have for generations.

The family didn’t just build accommodation; they’ve created something rare in modern Goa – a place that celebrates rather than destroys its agricultural soul. Walking the plantation feels like stepping back in time, when this region fed itself from its own abundant land rather than importing everything for Instagram-worthy cafes.

Their five simple, heritage-style cottages blend seamlessly into the landscape. Morning plantation walks have you picking seasonal fruit and spices, learning about soil conservation and understanding why this land was so coveted. Afternoons can be spent by the natural swimming pool which feels as inspired as the rest of the plantation.

Needless to say, meals feature ingredients grown steps from your door, complemented by their famous Urak – first-distilled cashew liquor that’s become legendary for its purity. Here’s proof that luxury doesn’t require destruction – sometimes it means having the wisdom to restore paradise exactly as it should be.

Our three words:

Heritage | Restored | Authentic

Hotel Story

Doris and Ajit Malkarnekar’s love story began in India’s remote Chandrapur District in 1973, where both were volunteering with renowned social worker and activist Baba Amte. Ajit, hailing from South Goa, and Doris, from Northern Germany, were united by their shared concern over increasing rural-to-urban migration and the accompanying brain drain affecting India’s countryside. Their deep commitment to rural development and sustainable living would shape their life’s journey together.

After spending nearly a decade in Germany, the couple made the conscious decision to return to rural Goa with their children, determined to make a meaningful difference in their adopted homeland. Following Ajit’s work with GIZ in the development sector, their son Ashok joined the family mission, helping to open their carefully nurtured paradise to visitors from around the world.

Dudhsagar Plantation began as an ambitious agricultural venture on a barren 50-acre tract of land. From 1984 onwards, Doris and Ajit embarked on an extraordinary transformation, methodically re-greening the degraded landscape and turning it into a thriving haven of biodiversity. The farmstay component was thoughtfully added in 2014, featuring five eco-friendly cottages constructed using vernacular architecture and local stone sourced within a 5-kilometer radius, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable building practices and supporting the local economy.
