What we say

Sitting on the roof terrace with a Gorkha beer and plate of masala peanuts, I thought to myself, Traditional Comfort does exactly what it says on the tin. Founded by visionary and sustainable pioneer Shiva Dhakal of Community Homestay Network, this is what happens when someone gives a three-star hotel proper thought – achieving character, service, and genuine Nepali influence without needing a five-star budget.

What I love about Traditional Comfort is the authenticity of their approach. This isn’t sustainability as ‘marketing speak,’ – it’s sustainability as stewardship, recognizing the hospitality industry’s real impact on society and environment. With just 35 rooms, they’ve combined Nepali design with modern conveniences and worked hard to ensure they’re Travelife Gold certified, which means every detail from eliminating single-use plastics to utilizing solar energy has been thoughtfully implemented.

The rooms are simple but comfortable, the food is good, the service attentive, and that roof terrace I was sitting on? Well, that’s where the magic happens. Picture yourself there in the evening, looking out over Kathmandu below. It’s where guests can meet, unravel the discoveries of the day and enjoy the fusion of old-world charm and urban style.

The name nails it, the hotel showcases traditional values while embracing modern comfort.

If you’re seeking a city hotel that hits the sweet spot between comfort and conscience, tradition and modern, that’s easy on your budget then look no further. Sometimes the best experiences come from places that simply do what they promise, and do it well.

Our three words:

Thoughtful | Unpretentious | Urban

Hotel Story

Founded by Shiva Dhakal, a seasoned tourism industry veteran with over a decade of experience in Nepal’s travel and hospitality sector. Born and raised in Kathmandu, Shiva developed his travel passion early, beginning as a trekking guide before advancing through sales and marketing roles. His deep understanding of authentic travel experiences led him to establish Traditional Comfort, aiming to provide visitors with genuine immersive stays in Kathmandu’s cultural heart.

Traditional Comfort operates on SOP-driven principles, deeply committed to showcasing local Newari heritage and culture. The philosophy centres on providing authentic boutique experiences reflecting community traditions and values. The hotel prioritizes local community support by employing Newari residents, offering training and professional development opportunities that empower the community while preserving cultural heritage. Strong sustainability commitments include solar energy usage, rainwater harvesting, waste reduction initiatives, and sourcing from local suppliers to support the economy and reduce carbon footprint.

This boutique hotel features design and décor inspired by traditional Newari art and architecture, creating culturally rich experiences. Guests enjoy guided city tours including temple and market visits, hands-on cooking classes featuring traditional Newari cuisine, and access to a stunning rooftop terrace overlooking Kathmandu. The hotel’s central location provides easy access to cultural sites while maintaining authentic local atmosphere.
