What we say

Can river cruising really be sustainable?” Founded in 2000 by travel expert and naturalist Raj Singh, the family behind Antara Cruises, has been answering this question for over 20 years.

But when you consider their approach, you see that it can. Journeys to the most off-beat of destinations provide positive economic impact to villages that rarely see tourists. All crew are local and every furnishing handcrafted by regional artisans. Each boat is designed specifically for its river, with ecological sensitivity including eliminating single-use plastic, sewage treatment plants on every ship, and solar power for ACs and kitchens.

That done and dusted, it’s time to consider their journeys which are, quite simply extraordinary. If you think about it, so much of India’s history came from these rivers. Before roads and railways, rivers were the main source of transport and exploration. This lost part of India’s heritage is what the family wanted to rediscover and in doing so, they’ve rediscovered forgotten waterways and unlocked hidden landscapes to reveal an India completely untouched by tourist circuits.

Having started with the Ganges and Brahmaputra, they then pioneered the epic 53-day Varanasi to Dibrugarh cruise, the world’s longest river cruise at 1,988 miles. Their latest venture, two-cabin catamarans in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika’s National Park show their continued imagination and versatility.

This seamless way to travel lets you focus on raw, otherwise unseen India, where one never quite knows what to expect, before returning to creature comforts. As Arjun, Raj’s son says, serendipity is their most powerful tool, unlocking places you simply can’t imagine to create unplanned but truly wow moments!

Hotel Story

Founded by visionary Raj Singh, Antara Cruises represents a lifelong mission born from childhood boat rides in Bharatpur. An innovative figure in India’s travel and conservation landscape since 1979, Raj is a renowned wildlife expert, author of landmark field guides, and founder of The Bagh Resorts. His understanding that great civilizations flourished along rivers inspired him to revive India’s forgotten riverine histories, launching India’s first river journeys in over a century in 2003.

The philosophy embraces “Today’s monsoon makes tomorrow’s cruises,” recognizing rivers as timeless arteries of culture, trade, and spiritual connection. Boutique vessels blend colonial, Mughal, and Art Deco touches with sustainability and luxury, serving regional specialties using traditional methods.

Unlike conventional river cruising, Antara offers unparalleled access to India’s most sacred and biodiverse waterways—the Ganges, Sundarbans, and Bhitarkanika. As an indigenous firm, they provide authentic cultural immersions celebrating Bengal’s artisans, privileged access to untouched landscapes inaccessible by land, and curated shore excursions with genuine local interactions at monuments, temples, and palaces. Guests witness morning aarti ceremonies on sacred waters, encounter over 320 bird species in mangrove forests, enjoy daily market-sourced regional cuisine prepared with traditional methods, and experience authentic rituals while cruising aboard thoughtfully designed ships that reflect India’s architectural heritage, creating deeply personal connections with the country’s living cultural and natural treasures.
